How They Voted On Saltwater LicenseFishing Line Message Boards: Here's what you've been waiting for...get those dialing fingers to work. The vote in the senate was 32 to 30 along party lines...all it would have taken was two Long Island senators to vote no and we would have NO SWL...the two most responsible were Craig John and Brian Foley! In the Assembly the two surprises...democrats of course Bob Sweeney and Harvey Wiesenberg. Here’s The Vote…

Surf Fishing This Season
Surf Fishing Reports This Season: With the closing of many tackle shops over the last season or two and many taking to the beach on foot now with the bad economy for boating, we need to band together and help each other as surfcasters. No tackle shop in Long Beach any more and the ones around the area are not really geared to surf fishing and they drop like flies every so often. I can’t be on every beach all the time so we need to help each other. Since many of you use the fishing reports off www.thefishingline.com and the phone Hotline Reports at 516-977-2088, I and many other surf anglers would sure appreciate it if we all would report our activities in a timely fashion. If you’re on a beach and it’s full of weed, please E mail me rich@thefishingline.com or call me from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 516-889-6895 or my cell at 516-435-8382. I’ll put the fishing and/or beach condition reports on the web site and the phone lines. We need to all help each other and be “eyes” on the beach for all of us. You can post them yourselves on our Message Boards at www.thefishingline.org and for NJ at www.NJanglers.org.

Rich Johnson's Report:
Thursday October 29: Winds NE 15 in the morning and S at 10 in the afternoon: Water was a mess this morning all brown looking like a regular coffee with milk. The high water mark was around 4 a.m. and at 10 a.m. water was terrible looking. The incoming tide and the wind shift to S at 10 in the afternoon was a big help and conditions were great by 4 p.m. all through this area. There was a still a very large push of water as the water pushed by the E/NE winds this past week have not been able to escape, so when the winds went south Thursday (10/29) afternoon there was a ton of water being pushed to the beach and you could not get on the jetties even 2 hours before high tide.

Towards the end of the incoming the fish did show up all through this area but all were small bass of 14 to 22 inches and most were on the west side of the jetties, tight to the rocks and in the pocket of shallow water. They still will not come up for anything and bucktails seem to be the only thins working right now. Len Magiore had five fish al using this same pattern Thursday afternoon. I had seven fish. I did have to chase four guys away from the jetty I was after they tried to set up four bait rods, two on each side of the jetty. No way I was standing for that nonsense. Meanwhile after working this jetty with some success, first two then a total of four guys show up with bait rods to set up on the jetty I was fishing. NO WAY JOSE! Thankfully one of them spoke English and I explained that was not going to happen and the scent of clams could kill my action....AND if I got tangled I was just going to cut their line...they got the message after I explained that with miles of beach they needed to set up bait fishing between the two jetties and give us all some space.

Friday October 30: Winds SE at 10. I fished the last couple of hours of outgoing Friday morning (9:30 to 11:30) and scored five bass, largest maybe 20 inchers and al on the white bucktails and white pork rind. Conditions are fantastic and with this afternoon’s southerly coming in and the flooding tide…you would be remiss not to be on a beach somewhere on the South Shore of LI.

Saturday October 31: Winds SW 20-25 & water great looking...in SW winds of 20 to 25 and a WILD, surf the bass were again cooperative and a little larger as some reported fish to 24 inches and nice fat football shaped, while some had 16 inch bass. The bite lasted till about 10 a.m. when it shut off and all week they seemed to be biting on the slack and changes of tides but shutting down for the middle 2-1/2 hours of a tide and either tide was there same scenario. White bucktails and chicken scratch Bombers were working and again in the wild water fish were in the pockets and in the wash. I had six bass to 24 inches & fat!! I went back down after the radio show at 5:15 and it was EVIL on the rocks.. I lasted about 15 minutes and said this is crazy and went home for dinner.

Sunday November 1: Winds N 10 & water getting brown and weed moving in. I hit the stones about 7 a.m. or so and had a quick bump on a Bomber but that was it. Water was turning brown right in front for no apparent reason either as conditions were not bad.  Weed was moving in with some beaches worse than others, but just the same not worth the effort. The full moon is tomorrow and weed should be hideous this entire week.

EAST END BEACHES
Montauk:
East End Bait & Tackle (631-728-1744):Willie Young of the MSA says they had fish in Montauk from Wednesday and even into Friday (10/16). It has been mostly the south side and sandy beaches as sand eels and bass are mixing with some bluefish. Some decent fish on the sandy beaches mid week with 24 to 34 inch bass and a few 25 pounders. Two 50 pounders were weighed in Friday caught from the south side like Caswell’s or deeper into the rocks than that. Friday and Friday night the north side and North Bar seemed to have the action, but there are fish on the south side and smaller fish on the sandy beaches with a few occasional decent fish. Saturday they had little action with a few small fish taken on the north side and the south side getting very dirty now by noon on Saturday. The surf is wild and most are walking into the north side and not driving and we’re surprised they have not closed the beach yet in very rough surf. Visit TFL's 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar.

East End Bait & Tackle will be holding a Striper Bass surf fishing tournament starting Sept. 13 and running until Dec. 5. The entry fee will be $25. All collected monies will be returned as cash prizes. Stop by the shop or give us a call for more details. SOUTH SHORE BEACHES
Shinnecock & Hampton Bays:
East End Bait & Tackle (631-728-1744):
Scott reported the beaches are alive with striped bass, but you have to do some hard work and spend some good time on the beaches. George White, surfcasting just east of Shinnecock on the beach needed a friend to help him ease a striped bass out of the suds; the fish weighed in at 53 pounds!  A mix of bass and blues are filtering through Shinnecock Inlet, but the Ponquogue  Bridge and Shinnecock Canal are temporarily boycotted by our piscatorial friends. Most anglers are using a white bucktail with either a red or white pork rind. We have increased our surf fishing inventory to now include Aquaskinz tops and accessories; Northbar Plugs; as well as other surf fishing accessories. East End Bait & Tackle will be holding a Striper Bass surf fishing tournament starting Sept. 13 and running until Dec. 5. The entry fee will be $25. All collected monies will be returned as cash prizes. Stop by the shop or give us a call for more details. Visit Our 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar. They carry plugs by Gibbs, Super Strike, J-N-Ski, After Hours, Stillwater, Smack-it, Bomber & Yo-zuri. Hours are Monday to Friday is 7 to 7, Saturday is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday is now 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the web at www.eastendbaitandtackle.com

Moriches: East End Bait & Tackle (631-728-1744): Scott reported action has been just okay with some fish at the inlet and the east side of the inlet. Winds are hammering them this season and on Saturday (10/31) it was a gale from the SW at 25 to 30 taking away most of the beach. It is like a cliff walking out on these beaches and as of 2 p.m. Saturday they were still open. Hours are Monday to Friday is 7 to 7, Saturday is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday is now 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the web at www.eastendbaitandtackle.com. Visit Our 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar. They carry plugs by Gibbs, Super Strike, J-N-Ski, After Hours, Stillwater, Smack-it, Bomber & Yo-zuri. On the weekends.  www.eastendbaitandtackle.com

South Shore
Fire Island Inlet:

Robert Moses Beaches to
Tobay:
Frank & Dicks Bait & Tackle (631-587-8442): Sal reports Friday (10/16) was the day to be at Democrat Point as the sand eels arrived and so did the big fish. There were bass 20 to 30 pounds picked at most of the day as fish were caught morning noon and night. You could not fish out front at Fields 2, 3, 4 or 5 as the sweep was just too big, too strong and too impossible. The water an hour before high tide Friday afternoon barely left enough sand enough to get off Demo so they closed Demo Saturday morning around 7:30 when state park personal could not drive down the road to get to Demo. Around 11 a.m. Saturday they opened the SW corner of Field 2 to allow surfcasters to gain access to the beach to they could drive westward to Demo and at least the Jetty as waters had receded enough by then. The RV road was still closed as they were waiting to see if the waters will ebb enough to allow access to Demo that way or not. They were waiting to see.

Tobay, Gilgo and Cedar Beach are basically unfishable right now as of 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The west end of Field 5 has been closed for just about the entire season already. Not much bait or action on the back side of any of the RM beaches so the weekend at this point is just about a washout. Visit Our 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar Visit them on the web at www.FranknDicks.com or call 631-587-8442 or hail them on VHF Ch. 71 when you're on the water.

Jones & Deb's Inlets:
Jones Beach:
Scotty's Fishing Station (516-432-4665): Tom reported lots of life off the beaches all though this area that surfcaster couldn't dream of reaching, but a few blues in the wash and along the jetties, but the wild winds have really stirred the pot so to speak in the ocean and the bait has finally shown up with monster blues under them. No one was able to sail in this wind on Friday (11/6), but it is the best sign of life we’ve seen in some time. Visit TFL's 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar

Point Lookout/Lido/Long Beach & Atlantic Beach:
Scotty's Fishing Station (516-432-4665): Tom reported lots of life off the beaches all though this area that surfcaster couldn't dream of reaching, but a few blues in the wash and along the jetties, but the wild winds have really stirred the pot so to speak in the ocean and the bait has finally shown up with monster blues under them. No one was able to sail in this wind on Friday (11/6), but it is the best sign of life we’ve seen in some time. Visit TFL's 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar

Rockaways/Breezy Point:
Lots of life and action at noon Friday (11/6) between 75th and 65th streets with adult bunker in the wash and some very PICKY and BIG blues in on them. Dave W. from Valley Stream was there and said he spends more time chasing then catching, but when he does they are 14 pound bluefish. Every time he catches up to the moving school and gets a line in the water they take off and move again. Very picky fishing as he was the only one in 45 minutes to pull one or two fish out of this melee out of five anglers in on it. There is a ton of life and birds off the beach that a surfcaster could never reach, but this is the best “life” we’ve heard on the entire south shore so far this day. This is the place to fish at night with large swimming plugs as the bass will come to the beach in the dark. Dave called back at 2 p.m. to say after a few hours of chasing the bait, he finished with a half dozen blues over 10 pounds and the tide was gone and so was the action by 2 p.m.

NORTH SHORE BEACHES

Western Sound:
City Island
Jack's Bait & Tackle
(718-885-2042):
John DeCuffa reported breaking news for surf fishermen. We've received reports of 25 to 30 pound bass being caught from the shoreline along Orchard Beach, New Rochelle and Eastchester Bay on Jack's famous fresh bunker so make sure to hit the shorelines now while these larger fish are in the feeding mood. Watch Jack's You Tube videos on his web site at www.jacksbaitandtackle.com. Visit Our 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar

John was featured on The Fishing Line TV Show in 2005. John & RJ scored big time on the giant bass with fish over 35 pounds in a few hours, 20 or more of them were keepers and they threw back keepers as well. You can order the extended home release video which is 55 minutes of non stop giant bass action.

Middle Long Island Sound:
Cold Spring/Northport/Huntington/Kings Park:
Terminal Tackle (631-269-6005)Terminal Tackle: John Richy reported the beaches are finally starting to get better bass catches and some decent sizes too. The bass are scattered here or there with no real hot spots. Some fish inside the river too on eels at night tossed like lures. Still bluefish around but they are starting to thin out and slide off the beaches. It is mainly a nighttime bite for bass with a few shorts during the day, but any keeper size or respectable schoolies are at night. All the beaches have fish but you never know what beach they will be at. Most anglers are using eels at night up here now.
They're open on their normal schedule of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closing at 2 p.m. on Sundays. On the web at www.terminaltackleco.com. Visit Our 24 Hour On Line Surf Seminar

Long Island Sound East:
Steve at We Go Fishing reported lots of good surf fishing on the north side of the North Fork. From Horton’s Point to Orient Point they have seen bonito and bluefish mixed with good results most of the trips anglers are making. Any north wind is exceptional as it pushes bait and gamefish up on the beach so keep that in mind. Not much to report right now with the bass from the beaches as they are still not moving or migrating and are in the deeper areas of the Race, Gut etc where they are supposed to be.

Know where they are...not where they were!
