Written By J. R. Warnet: JR has been been living in New Jersey over 25 years and fishing for 15 years.  JR concentrates on central fishing areas like Barnegat Inlet, Manasquan Inlet, Island Beach State Park (IBSP) but travels up and down the coast to get some other fishing in when he can.  You can usually find his 07' Silverado on the sand in Island Beach from Friday until Sunday morning during the summer.  I target the big four fish in Jersey, but loves offshore tuna trips in September and November.  Light spinning tackle and bait are his top favorites, but wants to get into saltwater fly and spear fishing this summer.  JR also enjoys freshwater fishing but I hasn't found too many good bass spots in central NJ as of yet.  One thing JR adds to his fishing articles and reports is a science background, having a vocational degree in Marine and Environmental Science and that helps when JR writese.  Other than that, I guess you can say I fish most of the year but my schedule holds me back from fishing as much as I want to...like the rest of us!

Overview A slow but steady pick of stripers and blues have been on the menu for many areas of Connecticut. With not much else of the agenda as far as inshore fishing is concerned, many of the area anglers have been taking large blackfish offshore. Not much can be said for false albacore fishing as the water temps drop too low for albies.

Westernmost CTFishing Line Message Boards: Shops are reporting there were birds working off of Southport Beach, but most bass are just shy of 28 inches. Inshore blackfish are really starting to put on the weight as one angler stopped in to display his 10-plus pound tog he had off Greens Ledge in Norwalk. Anglers fishing some of the structure off Bridgeport have reported the haul on blackfish has been even better than last year with fish consistently pushing the 7-pound mark.

Bridgeport to Stratford: Bass have been in short demand all week, thanks in part to lousy weather. Thirty and 31-inch stripers are all along the shoreline waiting to scoop up sand eels with bucktails, eels and big swimmers being the best choices locally. Bluefish are caught in 40-feet of water and are taking bunker or mackerel chunks. A 13 pounder was caught this week so the big guys are still around. Blackfish are taking clams and crabs in the Charles Island area with small sea bass mixed in. The Middle Grounds are still your best bet for big tog in 25 feet or deeper.

New Haven to Madison: The bass bite is still silent...for now. Larger bass are hard to find with the large bass run set to arrive within weeks. Strong bluefish action has been reported near the entrance to the Branford River while smaller blues have been dominant with many taking surface poppers. Blackfish anglers are limiting out with tog to 12 pounds and the average keeper is about 7 pounds. Bunker sightings are still a no show for the week.

Eastern CT:
CT River and the Race:
One shop in Old Saybrook reports some medium sized bass moved in to and just outside the mouth of the Connecticut River. Plugging along Great Island has been productive. They're hitting surface as well as subsurface lures. A couple of larger bass have been reported from the mouth of the Niantic River. Blackfish are starting to move into deeper water with some good catches reported from both Inner and Outer Southwest Reef. Hatchett’s Reef has been fair and similar reports have also come from Black Point.

Niantic Bay and Thames River: Not a lot of striper activity has been reported since last week before the storms came through. Big blues are definitely in closer then they were last week. The Race and Bartlett’s Reef are probably the best spots to check out for the upcoming week. Black fishing is really taking off with mixed sizes all across the board. There are nice sized fish in 10 to 20 feet of water near rock piles and jetties. Average sizes are in the 6 to 8-pound range with a large number of big guys in the 9 and 10-pound class.

Make sure you register (free) for our Discussion and Message Boards so you can discuss this and other hot topics right now!  Remember it is always important to say you heard, saw or read it on "The Fishing Line." and the boats and shops listed here are the only official reporting stations for "The Fishing Line."
